The Gray Barn is one of the oldest businesses in town and probably one of the most successful. On April 6, 1965, Bob and Jim Mellor took on a one-year lease from Reynold Boyd. Mr. Boyd was the first proprietor of the Bar. The business was leased as a hobby for Bob Mellor who worked full time at Massachusetts Electric, while his brother, Jim, ran the business full time. Their father George Mellor had recently retired and assisted his sons on a part time basis. After the lease expired, Bob and Jim took out a mortgage and purchased the property. The business is a sports-oriented tavern that is located in a residential area on Elm Place, off of Fletcher Street. The Barn is the best kept secret in town where friends and family gather to spend time together. The Barn is one of the few local bars remaining in town. Bob and Jim retired from the business in January, 2005 with Jim's two sons taking the reigns and continuing the family tradition. The Barn was one of the first bars to serve Budweiser products locally in the Valley provided by Consolidated Beverages for the last forty years. |
